Back in early June (2014) , an e-mail landed in my inbox from someone named Freddy announcing the opening of a gallery in Baltimore that would show work by “burgeoning, established, and enigmatic artists,” beginning with a two-person show by young artists Tisch Abelow and Peter Harkawik. It quickly became clear that Freddy is not a real person. The letter continues, “Outside of Baltimore, the gallery exists on the screen like Freddy Krueger exists in dreams.” That sounded intriguing—Reena Spaulings meets Wes Craven!—and so, after following the gallery’s action online for the past two months, I reached out to Freddy to see if he or she would be willing to do an interview. Freddy agreed, on the condition that we not discuss the rumors about his or her identity. That seemed like a fair deal. Our e-mail conversation follows below.

Gallery Four
(Gallery On Hiatus)
405 W. Franklin St 4th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21201
http://www.galleryfour.net
info@galleryfour.net
Gallery Four was a contemporary art space located in the heart of downtown Baltimore. A live/work exhibition space housed in an old industrial building, Focused on creativity rather than commerce, Gallery Four encourages artists to create large-scale works and installations that are often not feasible in smaller commercial galleries. Works are frequently created or refined in the gallery, which allows artists to directly respond to each other’s ideas. Featuring artists from all over the U.S. and the world, Gallery Four connected artists to Baltimore and Baltimore to the larger world of contemporary art, thereby encouraging a global art community.
Gallery Four maintains six live/work artist studio spaces that surround the central gallery. The artists-in-residence at Gallery Four possess complimentary skills and collaborate to develop programming and manage exhibition logistics. The artists-in-residence at Gallery Four are: Dustin Carlson, Caitlin Cunningham, Chris Day, Scott Jones, Val Karuskevichm, Flannery Silva. Gallery Four was founded in 2000 by Dustin Carlson and Jason Hughes. The gallery quickly gained attention by exhibiting ground breaking artists such as Chul Hyun Ahn, Matt Johnson, and Dan Steinhilber.

Open Space
(2009-2017)

openspacebaltimore@gmail.com
Open Space was an artist-run gallery located at 512 W. Franklin St. in Baltimore, MD. Open Space’s mission was to promote a vibrant, visible, and connected contemporary arts community in Baltimore through a consistent curated program of exhibitions, annual festivals, and a wide variety of supplemental events such as lectures, film screenings, and music shows. The space was founded in 2009 in the Remington neighborhood of Baltimore and grew to include a library and performance space in addition to a spacious gallery. In May of 2013, Open Space was displaced by a two-alarm fire. Open Space continued to work on programming including its two large-scale annual festivals, the Publications & Multiples Fair and the Artist-Run Art Fair, while seeking a new home. As of October 2014, the group has resumed its curatorial practice on West Franklin Street.
Open Space’s core curatorial perspective was variety; because the gallery is run as a collective, members bring in various backgrounds and interests which creates a diverse calendar of shows including a wide range of mediums and points of view. Open Space shows local, national, and international artists and produces events with attendance ranging from 50-50,000 people. We strive for a contemporary art community which is highly visible both in Baltimore and in a national art dialogue. It is also our mission to connect those producing quality contemporary arts programming across Baltimore to one another and those outside of Baltimore doing the same. Open Space is made possible by the love and hard work of its members and by the supportive and fruitful cultural community that exists in Baltimore.
